Protecting the vultures of northern Benin

Five vulture species occur in northern Benin, all listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. SOS Savane carries out dedicated monitoring of the Hooded Vulture in the municipalities bordering the Pendjari Biosphere Reserve and W National Park.

Implemented from 2024 to 2026 with the NGO Pépinière d'Afrique and support from FSOA, the Hooded Vulture conservation project restored 27.41 hectares of nesting and feeding areas, with 2,400 seedlings of native species planted.

The FAABA YÉBÉREKOU project, supported by the Fondation de France, builds on this work: community awareness-raising, ecological monitoring, setting up local committees, and the “Faaba Yébérekou” mobile app for awareness and data collection.
