Ex-situ conservation site

A sanctuary in the heart of the savanna

Our ex-situ conservation site, located in the heart of the Sudanian zone in northern Benin, in the commune of Tanguiéta (Atacora department), is an exceptional sanctuary dedicated to the preservation of sub-Saharan species. Surrounded by shrub savannas, it occupies a precise geographical position at latitude 10° 38′ 53.76732″ and longitude 1° 15′ 22.18752″, and is characterised by vegetation dominated by Sudanian species.

A semi-arid climate

The region’s semi-arid climate, with average monthly temperatures ranging from 30 to 34 °C, creates an ideal setting for a thriving diversity of birds. Rainfall, which varies between 400 and 1,000 mm, contributes to the site’s biodiversity while reflecting the challenges specific to a semi-arid ecosystem.
Infrastructure

Facilities designed for wildlife

The Tanguiéta04 site covers 2.4 hectares and is home to strategic infrastructure such as lodges offering a suitable level of comfort, spacious parks and enclosures for the animals. These facilities have been carefully planned to recreate natural habitats, with large green spaces, cleverly hidden nooks and installations designed to promote the well-being of the residents, whether butterflies, rodents or other emblematic species such as the sulcata tortoise.
